A Little Adventure Close to Home This October

Three local starting points for reading, exploring, and spending time together.

A Little Adventure Close to Home This October

Visit a library, take the ferry, or grow something together. There is plenty to discover right where we live.

When was the last time your family explored our coast just for the fun of it? Not because company was visiting or you had somewhere to be, but because you wanted to enjoy the place we call home?

This October, let's make a little room for that. A good family day can start with a library book, a ride across the bay, or a pot of soil on the back porch.

Let your local library lead the way

Families on both sides of the bay have a good place to begin: their local library. From hometown libraries throughout Baldwin County to Mobile Public Library branches, there are places to discover new books and connect with other families. Start with our Baldwin County and Mobile Macaroni KID event calendars when planning your next outing. Look for library storytimes, creative activities, and community events, and check individual listings for ages, times, locations, and registration details.

Let everyone choose something that catches their attention. A book about boats could inspire your next outing. A gardening book might have the kids asking what they can plant. And sometimes, a stack of stories and a comfortable place to read are all the plans you need.

Libraries are also places to meet people. Try an activity together, say hello to another family, and give yourself time to browse instead of rushing back out the door.

Take the ferry and enjoy our coast

With the summer vacation rush behind us, put a coastal day on your family's calendar. Take the Mobile Bay Ferry between Fort Morgan and Dauphin Island and make the ride part of the adventure.

For a child, watching the shoreline slip away can be every bit as exciting as arriving somewhere new. Look for boats, watch the birds, and talk about what connects the two sides of the bay.

Pick one stop on the other side rather than trying to see everything. Leave time for a walk, a picnic, or simply looking out at the water. Check the ferry's current schedule, fares, and service updates before leaving, and plan your return crossing. Service is weather dependent.

Visit a garden, then start one of your own

A visit to Mobile Botanical Gardens can get everyone looking more closely at plants. Ask the kids what they notice: the shapes of leaves, different textures, or a plant they would like to learn about.

Then bring that curiosity home. You don’t need a big yard or an elaborate raised bed to begin. A container with drainage, suitable soil, and the right amount of sunlight can be a starting point.

Choose something beautiful and something you can eventually eat. Alabama Extension's October gardening guide lists radishes, carrots, kale, and spinach among the options for South Alabama. Choose plants suited to your space and follow their planting instructions.

Let children help label the pots, check the soil, and watch for new growth. Take a picture each week or keep a little garden notebook. You will have something to learn about together, with the possibility of flowers to enjoy and food for your table.

Make it your kind of adventure

You don’t  have to do all of this in one weekend. Start with whatever sounds good to your family. Borrow the book. Plan the ferry ride. Plant the first seed.

Ready to plan your family's next little adventure?

Make our Baldwin County and Mobile Macaroni KID event calendars your first stop for local family events and activity information. Keep them bookmarked, check back as you plan your week, and share them with a friend who is always asking what there is to do with the kids. Have a favorite library activity, coastal outing, or home-garden idea? We would love to hear about it!
